A Not So Welcome Home For LeBron

Ladies and gentlemen.  Boys and girls.  Sports fans of all ages.  Gather around your televisions tonight for what I am sure will be a spectacle the likes we have not seen since Favre went back to Green Bay in a purple and white jersey.

Yes, LeBron James, the self proclaimed King, is making his way back to Cleveland tonight for the first time since taking a dump on the entire city.  In all honesty, I think the intros will be much more entertaining than the game itself.  I can't wait to hear the arena explode with the booing and the hissing.  The fans with their new fashionable "Queen James" gear ready to let him hear how they feel.  Can he handle the pressure of coming back "home" and having everyone hate him?  He went from being the hero of the city to going down south and becoming a sidekick.  LeBron, you are no longer the man.  You are a sidebar...A supporting role...A confused little boy who doesn't know how to deal with the way things have been going.  Your commercial even says "What should I do?".  This seems like something you should have thought about before packing up your life and moving it to a team where you are not the man anymore.  Let me tell you exactly what you should do.  Go out and get yourself some earplugs because you are going to be getting harassed all night by the people who used to idolize you.  It is amazing how fast it went from "Witness" to "Quitness" and Cleveland is ready to drop a bomb on you as soon as you show your face.  Personally, regardless of your skills and how good you are, I hope they make you cry tonight.  You are a disgrace to the league and to yourself.  If you are going to promise a championship to a city, make sure you bring it before you ditch them.  I love to see Miami having troubles this year.  The look on your face when "the big 3" can't pull their act together is like finding a check for a million dollars under the Christmas tree with my name on it.  So congrats LBJ.  You sold out and you are failing in Miami too.  I hope Cleveland wipes the floor with you tonight and after the game I hope the literally wipe the floor with your jersey.

On another topic, the United States got shot down in their quest for getting the 2022 World Cup to be played here.  Whatever, at least we didn't lose to some tiny country with less than a million people in it...wait, what?  We did?  What the hell is a Qatar?  Dear God that shows how much people think of America anymore.  We just lost the World Cup to the Rhode Island of the planet.  Is it because we don't have a lot of pull in the world anymore?  Is it because of our economy?  Is it because the government doesn't want to have foreigners come onto our soil since we clearly have so many friends around the world?  Maybe all of that is looking too deeply into it and it is just because we are America.  NOBODY CARES ABOUT SOCCER IN AMERICA.  You say football in America people wanna see FOOTBALL.  So let's not get all worked up about not having the 2022 World Cup.  Let's move on with our lives and enjoy the Eagles/Texans game tonight instead.  We can all complain about Soccer and LeBron for years and years, but let's just enjoy a real football game tonight.

Bizarro NFL Universe

This year, as any true NFL fan will tell you has been a roller coaster ride for a lot of teams as well as their fans.  This has been a year of ups and downs.  In the season, we are seeing the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs suddenly remember how to play football while the Arizona Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings seem to have forgotten completely.

They are not the only teams that have been a huge disappointment.  Well, I guess as an Eagles fan it isn't that disappointing, but for some, the thought of the Detroit Lions having a better record than the Dallas Cowboys is something that is worse than death.  What happened to these teams?  Playoff contenders and guys who have made great strides in the last few years and now they are among the worst in the league?

For the Cowboys, a lot of people might tell you that it is because Romo is injured and out for the season.  Really?  That is the reason you can't win?  Your quarterback goes down in week 7 and he is the reason you are 1-7.  It is a reasonable argument as many Cowboys fans don't actually know anything about football, but for people who actually know what they are talking about, that doesn't make sense.  So they get rid of Wade Phillips next.  We will see if this has any impact at all, but it seems that every time I see Dallas play, they look deflated.  They know they won't make the playoffs this year.  They are under a scary looking Giants team, an Eagles squad that looked to have no future until Kevin Kolb got hurt and Mike Vick saved the day and out of nowhere they are a threat, and a rebuilding Redskins team with a new coach and a fantastic quarterback in Donovan McNabb (excuse the bias from an Eagles fan praising McNabb).  The chances of them climbing back into the race against any of the teams in that division are slim to none.    It might just be time to do some house cleaning on the team and start over Jerry!

What about the Cardinals and Vikings?  What's their story?  The Cards don't seem to have the same excitement behind them after losing Kurt Warner.  The players know it, the fans know it and the people like me who don't even live near Arizona know it.  They have 3 no name quarterbacks that they can rely on with Derek Anderson leading the charge.  Wow, if that doesn't spell excitement, nothing does.  They have a lot of the same guys that made them a dangerous team other than Warner and Anquan Bolden but those are some big names to lose.  As for the Vikings, there is a much simpler answer.  During the off season, they should have spent more time practicing instead of chasing down an over the hill quarterback who should have retired 6 times by now.  Come on, those cell phone photos?  You are too old for that stuff Favre.  Get your head in the game.  You can barely grip yourself much less a football.  Get it together and just retire already.  The world is sick of you and you have ruined your legacy.  Congratulations!

As mentioned earlier, the Eagles have come out of nowhere this year.  I just wouldn't feel right doing a football article without talking about my birds.  All signs during the preseason left a lot of people in Philly scratching their heads and wondering if they should even get their gear out of the closet.  They released half of the team including our hero out of Villanova; Brian Westbrook, and the man who had the city on his back for his entire career; Donovan McNabb.  We all felt betrayed by the coaching staff and the ownership after letting these 2 as well as many of our other big names leave us.

Let's focus on the QB spot for a second.  You send our franchise QB to another team...and not just ANY other team, but a division rival?  Are you kidding me?  If you are going to be cheap and stupid about keeping him at least send him to the AFC where he won't hurt you!  So in comes Kevin Kolb.  The prophecy speaks of a young quarterback with 2 good games since being drafted in 2007.  Wait, that wasn't a prophecy at all, it was a fat coach who doesn't use his head in any situation.  I swear if a zombie went for his brains he would starve.  Anyway, something amazing happened for the team when the "bright new future of the Eagles" went down with a concussion.  Mike Vick actually got a chance to play...and not just for one or two drives, but an entire half.  Guess who lights it up and gets to stay in even after Kolb is healthy.  Finally, Andy makes a decision that benefits the team.  Vick gets hurt against the 'Skins and Kolb comes back in.  He doesn't play too bad for the time being, but a real fan wants an established player under center regardless.  Vick comes back and dismantles Manning and the Colts after the bye.

So as you can see, the league is not the only thing with crazy roller coaster type ups and downs.  Teams are going through the same thing.  What worries me, and most NFL fans, is the fact that we might not get to see our game next season.  They are going to make such a wild ride year this year and then possibly pull the rug out from under us?  That doesn't seem fair.  I think I speak for all of us when I say "Please work something out because it is going to be a long bunch of months if we don't have our football".

The First Ever Unathletic Department Blog

Hello and welcome to a blog that will not hold things back.  If you are the type of person who doesn't like opinionated sports writing, you might just want to check out a different page.  I am a guy who grew up in the Philadelphia area.  You know what they say about us Philly fans.  We always have something to say.  And that is one of the great things about us.  You may not always like what we say or do, but we know and love our teams and we know what we expect out of them.  If they don't bring it every game, they will get booed more than the visiting team.  Some people think that makes us terrible people and flat out bad fans.  To them, I say that you don't know what a true fan is.  When you have seen as much let down as we have, let me know what nice things you have to say about your teams.  But do we leave them?  Never in a million years.

What can you expect from this blog?

The answer is pretty simple.  You can expect an in your face look at what is going on in the world of sports.  I will tell it like it is whether it be about my team or yours.  You might not always like what I have to say, but I bet it will have you coming back to read more from the next post.  I mean come on, we threw ice balls at Santa, but every Christmas he is outside the mall asking for donations.  If that didn't scare him off then this shouldn't scare you off.

I welcome feedback.  If you want to discuss something, feel free to comment on here or to just send me an email.  However if you just want to hate, save your energy because you will be deleted and blocked.

Now that the intro is out of the way, let's talk sports.  As I sit here watching the 76ers play the Thunder, it only makes sense that basketball is on my mind.  I know what you are thinking.  "What does a guy from Philly know about basketball?  He hasn't had a team to watch in years".  While this may be very true, some people in the city actually do still care about this team.  And this is a year that is more exciting than any year since Iverson left the first time.  Yes, they have 2 wins and 6 losses right now, but it is still a pretty exciting time for Sixers fans.

We have a new coach that brings a lot of energy to the court.  He seems upbeat and positive in interviews even after losses.  It almost gives us hope that something good is on the horizon.  He is not the only new guy to add excitement to the game.  Because we were so "good" last year, we got the second overall draft pick and got Evan Turner from The Ohio State University.  The kid shows nothing but promise and is already turning some heads in the early part of his career.  Another interesting thing you will notice when looking on the court is the lack of butterfingers magee...I mean Sammy Dalembert.  He was traded for Spencer Hawes who has started off slow but has some promise and Andres Nocioni who has been impressive since being picked up.  Put that on top of an Elton Brand who is finally playing like the guy we saw on the Clippers.  As a whole, they are a young team but they are looking better every game.  Given time, they could be a sleeper team this year.

Check back often for more updates and interesting commentary on the topic we all love so much.  Don't forget, live by these words:
